SEO & accessibilityFashion product image SEO: write useful alt text and captions
Learn to write descriptive, accessible alt text and photo captions for fashion product images without keyword stuffing.

Write for image understanding first
Alt text should help someone who cannot see an image understand its relevant content. Name the clothing and visible detail when it matters, such as “cream knit sweater with a rose skirt, styled on a model.” Avoid file numbers, vague labels and lists of search terms.
A visible caption can identify styling, explain a before-and-after pair or add context. Alt text supports nonvisual access; a caption is visible to everyone. Write each for its reader rather than copying one into the other.
A human-readable filename can make an asset easier to manage. Place the image near relevant product copy and use a meaningful page title. Search visibility depends on many factors, so image text alone cannot promise a ranking.
Put the guidance into practice
A useful alt description might be “Pink cardigan with a white camisole and plaid skirt, seated in a garden.” If a second image is a close-up of the knit, describe that detail instead of repeating the same sentence. Accurate and distinct descriptions are more helpful than adding a phrase such as “best fashion photo online.”
Before you publish
- Describe the subject and useful visual detail.
- Avoid internal file codes and keyword stuffing.
- Use captions to add context, not repeat the title.
- Disclose generated imagery when context calls for it.
